In January, shortly after returning to the White House, President Trump approved an order imposing what were described as “catastrophic” tariffs. The aim was to “hold China, Mexico and Canada accountable for their promises to halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US”. Under this order, 25 percent tariffs were placed on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, while 10 percent tariffs were imposed on goods from China.
The 47th President of the United States further explained that the only “solution” for Canada to avoid these tariffs was to become the US’ “cherished 51st State”.

On Monday (March 3), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement, saying, “Today, after a 30-day pause, the United States administration has decided to proceed with imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports and 10 per cent tariffs on Canadian energy. Let me be unequivocally clear – there is no justification for these actions.”
