Households Urged To Shut Windows ‘Day And Night’ For The Next 4 Weeks

Households have been issued a serious warning after a venomous species has now firmly established itself in homes.

Households across the U.K. have been urged to keep their windows shut ‘day and night,’ amid the threat of the most venomous arachnid entering.

The massive creatures are said to come with a wasp sting bite, and are gearing up to enter homes during their annual mating-season.

It’s known as the ‘most venomous’ in the country, and one expert has warned that being aware isn’t ‘paranoia,’ but actually ‘smart preparation.’

Speaking to the Express, leading arachnologist Dr Tom Elwood explained why this time of year is where things start to ramp up.

“August is when male spiders become active,” he said.

“They’re searching for a mate and they’ll wander through open windows, up walls, into bathtubs – anywhere they can.”

But it’s not just any kind of spider that prompted the warning.

The spider preparing to enter U.K. homes belongs to the same family as the deadly Black Widow spider.

So it’s not the kind of thing we want to be messing with.

Dr Elwood added: “Spiders are drawn to dust, insect remains and debris on window frames.

“Webs cling better to rough or grimy surfaces. That’s why cleaning your windows is just as important as keeping them shut.”

And while you might not see the spiders on the move, the expert noted that it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

He explained: “Spiders are already on the move.

“You may not see them, but they’re out there – climbing walls, slipping in through vents, and squeezing through the tiniest cracks.”

The spider in question is the False Widow, and they’re capable of inflicting a painful bite.

In fact, the breed is one of the 12 spiders in the U.K. that are known to have bitten humans.

And although the False Widow bite is not lethal, their venom can result in swelling and painful burns that may lead to fever.

But how do we go about protecting our homes from such an invasion?

The first piece of advice is to keep windows closed during the day and at night.

But cleaning the window glass and their frame weekly can also help reduce the risk.

Sealing up any visible gaps or cracks in your house is also a must.

According to experts, using scents like peppermint oil will also deter False Widows, as well as regularly getting rid of spider webs, where they can quite comfortably live and breed.

If you have foliage attached to your house, it’s probably a good idea to trim it down, as it can provide an easy pathway for spiders to enter.

Elwood concluded his warning: “Do the right things now, and you won’t be waking up to spiders crawling across your bedroom floor.”
