England win Euros Live: Lionesses triumph in tense penalty shootout

The Lionesses have won their second consecutive European tournament! England triumphed in a tense penalty shootout to clinch the trophy, with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning penalty.

Mariona Caldentey gave Spain the lead in the first half of the final, but Alessia Russo scored a sublime header from a Chloe Kelly cross to equalise. Spain were on top for most of the game, but for all of their possession, they couldn’t find a way through the Lionesses’ defence.

It went to penalties and despite misses from Beth Mead and Leah Williamson, Anna Hampton saved twice, whilst Salma Paralluelo dragger her effort wide. And who else but Chloe Kelly made it 3-1, bringing the European Championship back to Wembley again.

The players celebrated their win on the pitch at St Jakob Park in Basel, with Sweet Caroline ringing out as fans went wild back home, including at St James’ Park STACK.

Chloe Kelly thanks Sarina Wiegman

Chloe Kelly thanked her detractors and said England boss Sarina Wiegman “gave me hope when I didn’t have any” after she fired home the winning penalty in their Euro 2025 final triumph over Spain in Switzerland.

“She’s amazing,” said Kelly, asked about a coach who has now led teams to three consecutive European trophies.

“She is an incredible woman. What she’s done for this country, we should all be so grateful. What she has done for me individually, she gave me hope when I probably didn’t have any, and she gave me an opportunity to represent my country again.”

King Charles congratulates Lionesses

King Charles congratulated the Lionesses, saying that their victory was a “great source of pride” for England.

In a post on the Royal Family account on X, formerly Twitter, he said:

“This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025.

“For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant ‘football’s coming home’.

“As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family’s warmest appreciation and admiration.

“More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms.

“Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!”

Princess Charlotte reaction

Prince William was on stage to offer the players a handshake and congratulations as they received their medals. And his daughter Princess Charlotte has grabbed a lot of the attention from her reaction to Chloe Kelly’s winning penalty.

Newcastle MP says congratulations

Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central and West, called the Lionesses an inspiration in a post on Twitter this evening.

‘The tallest of the tall’

Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis, speaking on BBC Radio 5Live, praised Hampton for two big saves in the shootout.

“Hannah Hampton has been put in the spotlight in this tournament,” she said. “Has she stood up? Has she stood tall? The tallest of the tall, the biggest of big.

“To help your team win back-to-back European Championships – be proud Hannah Hampton.”

‘I’m so proud of every single one of them’

Ellen White, part of the England squad that won Euro 2022, said: “This England team just epitomises resilience don’t they? The mentality, the hard work, the togetherness. I want to burst into tears I’m so proud of every single one of them.

“Sarina Wiegman has won three Euros in a row, that’s extraordinary, and that girl Chloe Kelly, wow, that mentality to score that winning penalty, and credit to Hannah Hampton as well.”

And White added: “It was a ridiculous penalty with that much pressure. I love the confidence, everything about her energy. She’s had an up-and-down year but she’s come out on top.”

‘England never gives up’

The North East’s former England captain Steph Houghton called the mentality of the Lionesses “scary” after they beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to retain their European title.

“It’s incredible, I’ve no words,” Houghton said on BBC Sport. “This England team never gives up. There’s been times in this tournament where they’ve had backs to the wall but that is the mentality of being a Lioness.

“Chloe Kelly has been through so much this year and to see her score that winning penalty to bring back that trophy for England is so unbelievable…

“The journey this team has been in is something I’d never ever predict. To come back from the France game, to perform against the Netherlands and Wales and then the extra-time games, to be successful you need all 23 players and the staff as well all aligned. This mentality is scary.”

Lucy Bronze played tournament with a fractured tibia

Northumberland’s very own Lioness Lucy Bronze played the entire tournament with a fractured tibia, she told BBC after the game.

She said:

I think that’s why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I’ve been in a lot of pain. But if that’s what it takes to play for England, that’s what I’ll do.”

‘We’ve ridden our luck’ – Williamson

Captain Leah Williamson said:

“It’s just total disbelief, but at the same time I knew it was going to happen. Playing for this England team is unbelievable. You just cannot put us down and it’s such an amazing feeling to be a part of.

“There’s always a moment when I think, ‘right girls, now is the time, let’s turn it on’. As soon as we started, the way we defended as a back four and as a team, nothing came through us and I felt like it was going to be our day…

“We’ve ridden our luck. I don’t think we were lucky but we’ve ridden our luck and we’ve pulled up at the right time.”

Michelle Agyemang named young player of the tournament

Michelle Agyemang was named young player of the tournament.

She said after the match:

“I’m just so grateful. I thank God for where he’s brought us as a team. It’s so hard coming from a loss in the first game to now, but everything happens for a reason and now we’re European champions.

“I think it’s just surreal to have come this far so quickly. It’s only by the grace of God and my team-mates and the staff and coaches. Everyone has put in the effort to get me where I am and I’m so grateful to everyone around me.”

Jess Carter ‘speechless’

Jess Carter said:

“I feel like I’m speechless. It’s relief, it’s excitement, I don’t know how to summarise it. I couldn’t be prouder.

“I want to say a massive thank you to our fans, to my team, to my family. And to everyone else who doubted us and who doubted me personally, I think we’ve just proved to you what we’re capable of.

“I didn’t doubt we would win in the shootout. I fully believed this team was going to win it.

“It’s been crazy. For me I was pretty disappointed with how I’d been playing in the tournament, but looking back at it now I could not give a damn. What mattered is the end and how we all kept fighting to win games and that’s what we’ve done today.”

‘From the first game it was chaos’ – Sarina Wiegman

England boss Sarina Wiegman said:

“I can’t believe it. The word ‘team’ really described who we are – a team.

“We said we can win by any means and that’s what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible.

“I just can’t believe it, but I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy. It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch – all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponents.

“From the first game it was chaos. Losing your first game and becoming European Champions is incredible. Football is chaos.”

‘We’ve got that grit’ – pen hero Hampton

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton said:

“This team is just unbelievable, incredible. We’ve shown throughout the tournament we can come back when we go a goal back. We’ve got that grit, that English blood in us. We never say die, we keep going and we did that today.

“When Chloe stepped up I turned around to the fans, miming a kick and trying to ask if we score do we win, I’d completely lost track.

“They were just cheering at me so I didn’t know what the answer was, but then I saw that run up and that was it, we’ve won. I can’t believe it.”

‘I don’t miss penalties twice’ – Chloe Kelly

Chloe Kelly told BBC One after the final whistle:

“I’m so proud of this team, so grateful to wear this badge and so proud to be English. I was cool, I was composed, I knew I going to hit the back of the net. I don’t miss penalties twice.

“It’s unbelievable, it’s not just this team it’s the staff behind us. Twenty-three players and all the staff behind us. Sarina Wiegman has done it again. It’s unbelievable.

“It’s going to be crazy. I hope the whole of England comes out to support us and show the love to all these girls because they deserve it.”
