Could Vladimir Putin Be Arrested After Landing In U.S. For Donald Trump Meeting Tomorrow?

The International Criminal Court issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest in 2023.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to Alaska, U.S., this Friday (August 15), for a crucial summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The meeting comes as the war in Ukraine is ongoing, but it’s seemingly not the only topic of conversation that the world will have its eyes on.

Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes.

The ICC can issue arrest warrants for individuals who have been accused of committing genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.

A total of 125 countries are parties to the International Criminal Court, but Russia is not one of them.

Which raises the crucial question: Can Putin be arrested during his meeting with Trump in Alaska?

The president has been accused of war crimes, including the abduction and trafficking of Ukrainian children.

Speaking to The Sun, military expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon explained that the situation is complicated.

While Russia is not a country that’s party to the ICC, neither is the U.S. , making it a ‘loophole.’

Bretton-Gordon said: “The Americans aren’t [bound by the ICC], so – he can go to Alaska.

“That is the loophole. He can operate exactly how he sees fit.

“He wouldn’t have gone anywhere where potentially he could be arrested.”

But the choice to meet in Alaska specifically, also wasn’t meaningless.

The state’s geographical proximity to Russia is noteworthy, given that the two nations are separated by just a few miles of water.

The expert added: “Putin is absolutely fixated about his own security, and his desire not to wander out of friendly airspace.

“There’s not much of that to Alaska – he would only be in international airspace for a few miles.”

While the location was strategic on Putins end, the question of who will attend the summit remains unknown.

Initial reports suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may join the two leaders, but it was quickly confirmed that it wasn’t a possibility.

Despite Ukraine being unrepresented at the summit, the military expert emphasized: “Zelensky is the most important person in all of this.

“I think there’s pretty low confidence that anything that is acceptable to President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine is going to be decided.”

The true purpose of the meeting is still unknown, and it’s still unclear which of the two world leaders has the upper hand going into the talks.

The former British Army officer added: “Until fairly recently, it’s been pretty clear that President Putin has absolutely no desire for peace.

“His aim at the beginning of his special military operation over three and a half years ago was to subjugate the whole of Ukraine.”

He continued: “If Trump follows through with his sanctions and tariffs… then this is the reason I think that Putin has come to the table.”

The success of the talk will be determined by whether common ground can be found between the two.

The absence of President Zelensky holds many question marks for Ukraine, but Bretton-Gordon pressed that a ‘bad deal for Ukraine is worse than no deal at all.’
