Why Archie And Lilibet’s Faces Could Soon Be Revealed Despite Meghan Markle And Prince Harry’s Bid For Privacy
There are rising fears that Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet‘s faces may be exposed despite Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s privacy wishes.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have chosen to keep their two children out of the public eye; the last time they were captured on camera was in the couple’s 2022 Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan.
They have not released any photos of their face since, in a bid to protect their children, prioritizing their privacy and safety.
Markle returned to Instagram earlier this year after being off social media for five years following their relationship breakdown with the Royal Family.
Since returning to the platform, the Duchess has shared glimpses into her personal and home life.
The 44-year-old regularly posts snaps with Prince Harry and often Archie and Lilibet, but their faces are always kept hidden.
Markle previously told CBS: “Our kids are young… They’re amazing, but all you want to do as parents is protect them.
“And so, as we can see what’s happening in the online space, we know that there’s a lot of work to be done there, and we’re just happy to be able to be a part of change for good.”
Pictures of Archie and Lilibet are normally snapped with their backs to the camera, or Markle will use emojis to cover their faces.
In a recent trip to Disneyland, to celebrate the young Princess’s fourth birthday, the Duchess shared a photo of the family, with love hearts covering her children’s faces.
However, cybersecurity experts are now warning against the use of emojis.
Lisa Ventura, an award-winning cybersecurity specialist and founder of Cyber Security Unity, told The Independent: “I need to be brutally honest here: putting an emoji over a child’s face provides virtually no real privacy protection whatsoever.
“This approach is more security theatre than actual security.”
According to experts, despite parents’ attempts to protect their children’s identities, enough identifiable information is being shared.
Details in photographs, such as the background, clothing, and locations, can be used to identify the children despite their faces being covered.
Advanced artificial intelligence tools can now remove emoji stickers and reconstruct faces. This can be used for malicious purposes, such as cyberbullying, blackmail, and creating abuse-related content.
This means that even without a child’s face visible, strangers can identify ages, routines, schools, and the local area leading to them being identified.
Ventura stated: “Most parents aren’t just posting one carefully emoji-protected photo.
“They’re sharing multiple images over time, and the combined data from all those posts creates a much bigger privacy concern than any single image.”
The cybersecurity specialist urges parents to only post snaps of their children from behind or with a physical object obstructing their faces.
