Man Dies After Eating Broccoli
A man has died and nine others have been injured after consuming broccoli.
Luigi Di Sarno, 52, collapsed and later died after eating a broccoli and sausage sandwich in the Italian town of Diamante.
The artist and musician was one of several people who ate the sandwich, and nine others were consequently rushed to hospital, with two of the patients still in a serious state.
Two teenagers, as well as members of Di Sarno’s family, were taken to the nearby Annunziata Hospital and placed in intensive care.
They had bought the broccoli and sausage sandwich from a food truck in the town, which is located along the coast in Calabria.
A mass recall is now underway.
A friend of Di Sarno paid tribute to him on social media.
They wrote: “The world loses once again a beautiful person, leaving a void in all those who truly cared for him.
“We had rare encounters in recent times but mutual respect never waned, we had a beer pending and many stories to share. It will be for another world, rest in peace!”
It comes amid a growing outbreak of botulism caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum.
It’s been reported that various Italian government agencies are investigating the botulism outbreak, and as a result, are collecting samples of the affected foods.
Vendors that have been impacted by the outbreak are also being shut down.
It has not yet been revealed exactly which type of product is being recalled, but it’s been reported that broccoli preserved in oil is being seized.
The bacteria in question attacks the body’s nerves and causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and death in rare cases.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated: “Foodborne botulism can happen by eating foods that have been contaminated with botulinum toxin.
“Common sources of foodborne botulism are homemade foods that have been improperly canned, preserved or fermented. Though uncommon, store-bought foods also can be contaminated with botulinum toxin.”
The mayor of Diamante, Achille Ordine, has asked people not to cause panic or circulate rumors.
But it’s not the only food that people have been warned about over the years.
It’s been revealed that the world’s ‘most dangerous’ substance can be found in common canned foods, as well as our favourite cinema snack.
A 2017 outbreak saw the substance infiltrate nacho cheese, leaving the sauce a poisoned hazard.
The outbreak of clostridium botulinum, the deadliest toxin which is 40 million times more potent than cyanide, was linked to four batches of poisoned cheese.
The second most deadly substance is known as batrachotoxin, and is carried by the Golden Poison Frog – known as the most poisonous animal on the planet.
