People Are Only Just Realizing Why There’s A Little Pocket In Women’s Underwear
Most women’s underwear has an extra piece of fabric that resembles a ‘pocket’ – but why is it there?
There are lots of little quirks that go unnoticed in life, one being the extra layer of fabric in women’s underwear.
Despite wearing panties for many years, many people have become ‘puzzled’ by the small pouch that is sewn into the crotch area.
But there’s actually a very valid reason for it.
There are many styles of underwear available for women to choose from, be it a thong or Brazilian, but the gusset remains a common feature in all.
According to research, the classic brief is the most popular style to wear, given that it offers full coverage to both front and back, sits at the natural waistline, and is known for its comfort and practicality for everyday wear.
The gusset is typically made of cotton, but the detail is actually important for hygiene reasons.
Curiosity got the better of one person, who took to X to ask: “I’ve always wondered why do underwear has these holes???”
But before people responded with the real reason behind the extra bit of material, others made light of the question.
One said: “Don’t listen to the people saying it’s for ‘reinforcement’ or some rubbish.
“It’s to store hidden chicken nuggets for later.”
As another added: “Well, that is Victoria’s secret.”
But others helpfully came to the rescue with a real explanation.
After the post garnered over 170,000 likes and more than 15 million views, one noted: “The extra piece of fabric is called a gusset, and it’s there to reinforce the crotch area.
“It makes the piece more durable and stops moisture from seeping through. You could topstitch so there’s no hole, but it’s not really necessary and can cause irritation.”
Another agreed, and added: “It helps prevent UTIs and yeast infections, you can also put a liner in it if you know your flow is heavy, so if it bleeds through it won’t bleed through your underwear.”
Others noted how it could have been useful back in the day.
A third noted: “Pads. They used to have long ends that you would push into the holes to keep them in place.”
Speaking to the Daily Star, underwear company Leonisa noted that men’s underwear may also have the feature.
The company notes: “Men’s underwear may also have a gusset, but it’s far more common in women’s panties.
“Gussets can be found in just about every type of underwear for women, from boy-shorts, to bikini panties, to thongs.”
Another user on X clarified: “It’s a functional design! That small section, called a gusset, helps with ventilation, moisture control, and overall comfort.”
